Making wheat better – with Christina Clarke

University of Reading PhD student Christina Clarke discusses how improving the depth of rooting in wheat could alleviate the effects of climate change

Christina’s PhD, entitled ‘Root systems of the sustainable intensification and resilience of wheat’, has her out in a field taking samples all summer. Her aim is to selectively breed a strain of wheat plant with deeper roots that will be more resilient to drought. But will farmers think it’s worth it?
